In recognition of his outstanding contribution to research and education relations between the UK and Japan, Paul Madden, the British Ambassador to Japan, presented Professor Hiroshi Matsumoto, President of RIKEN and former Kyoto University President, with an Honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Professor Matsumoto’s commitment to promoting academic excellence through international collaboration has helped build strong research relationship between the UK and Japan. Under his leadership, Kyoto University developed a deep and substantive relationship with the UK. In particular, the partnership with the University of Bristol has led to demonstrable and valuable results for both countries and for the advancement of global knowledge on a diverse range of subjects, and has extended to cooperation with industry.

Professor Matsumoto is now President at RIKEN, Japan’s largest comprehensive research institution and globally renowned for world-class research across a diverse range of scientific disciplines, where he continues to apply his leadership and strong experience to internationalising Japan’s research base.
