Planned roadworks in the North West – summary for Monday 27 October to Sunday 2 November

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 24 October and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Barthomley

Overnight work is underway to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at junction 16 of the M6. The scheme will provide a third lane on the north and southbound exit slip roads and the approach on the A500. Additional traffic lights will also be installed. There will be some overnight closures of slip roads and the A500 and B5078 at different stages of the project. A temporary speed limit of 50mph is also in place, and the project is expected to be completed in December.

M6 Junction 26 Orrell

A major project is taking place at Orrell Interchange, which will see extra lanes and traffic lights added to the junction with the M58 and the A577. The initial stage of work will require overnight closures of the link road between 10pm and 5am. The junction will remain open for vehicles travelling between the M6 and the M58, but a diversion will be in place for local traffic coming on or off the motorways at the interchange. The majority of the work for the rest of the project will take place overnight or at weekends and will require some closures of the southbound slip roads, the roundabout and the link road to the A577.

M6 Junction 31 Preston

The hard shoulder and lane 1 of the motorway are closed near to junction 31 while engineers carry out investigative work using drilling equipment. The work is due to be completed by Friday 31 October.

M6 Junction 32 Broughton Interchange

A project is being carried out to reduce congestion around the motorway junction which connects the M6 to the Blackpool-bound M55. There will be narrow lanes, plus some overnight slip road and carriageway closures until the project is completed in October.

M6 Junction 35 Carnforth to Junction 38 Brough

A scheme is underway to improve drainage on sections of the M6 between junctions 35 and 38. The work requires the closure parts of Lane One on the northbound side of the motorway, 24 hours a day, along with parts of Lane One on the southbound side overnight, between 8pm and 6am. Sections of the hard shoulder will also be closed. The work is due to be completed by mid-November.

M6 Junction 42 to 43 Carlisle

There will be some overnight closures of the northbound and southbound carriageways, between 8pm and 6am, while resurfacing work takes place. The work is due to be completed in October.

M53/M56 Interchange Ellesmere Port

Resurfacing work is taking place at the interchange between junction 15 of the M56 and junction 11 of the M53 during weekends. Some sections of the motorway and slip roads will be closed at weekends from 8pm on Fridays until 10am on Sundays mornings, including all day on Saturdays. Three bridges at the interchange will benefit from the work which also includes replacing the joints which allow the bridge structure to expand or contract with changes in the weather. The project is due to be completed by the end of November.

M56 Junction 12 Runcorn to Junction 14 Helsby

Work is taking place to resurface the westbound carriageway of the M56 between junction 12 at Runcorn and junction 14 at Helsby. The work will also include the replacement of worn road markings on the eastbound carriageway. All of the resurfacing will be done overnight between 10pm and 5am, Mondays to Fridays. Lane closures and some overnight diversions will be in place. During the day, drivers may also notice some hard shoulder closures associated with the work.

M60 Junction 8 Sale to M62 Junction 20 Rochdale

A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The first stage of the smart motorway project will see engineers carry out site surveys and ground investigation work, with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers.

M60 Junction 24 Denton

Phase two of the Denton Island improvements is underway at junction 24 of the M60, where the motorway meets the M67 and the A57– a key commuter route into Manchester city centre. The whole project is due to be completed by Friday 19 December with most of the work carried out overnight. Some road and lane closures will be necessary.

A66 Hutton

Resurfacing work will take place over night, between 8pm and 6am, on the A66 at the Hutton and Greystoke junction from Saturday 1 November. The work will focus on resurfacing a right turn lane in the central reservation. One lane will be closed in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by Monday 3 November.

A66 Chapel Brow

Two schemes to resurface the A66 between the Chapel Brow and Fitz roundabouts and between Sanford and Warcop are due to start on Monday 27 October. Temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit will be in place, and drivers may be led through the roadworks by a contractor’s vehicle at 10mph overnight, between 8pm and 6am. The work is due to be completed by Sunday 7 December.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

The westbound carriageway on the A66 will require a series of closures while the Forestry Commission carries out tree felling at Wythop Forest. A contraflow system will be in place with a lane running in each direction along the eastbound carriageway. Temporary traffic lights will also be used on some occasions. The project is due to be completed by the end of November.

A66 Mungrisdale

Work is taking place to resurface a three-quarter-of-a-mile stretch of the A66 near its junction with the A5091. Temporary traffic lights will operate overnight, between 8pm and 6am, and one of the two climbing lanes on the eastbound side will remain closed during the day. The project is due to be completed by Thursday 6 November.

A483/A55 Roundabout, Chester

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are set to benefit from quicker and safer journeys as part of a major improvement of the A55 and A483 roundabout near Chester. Work to remodel the roundabout, south of the city, is due to be completed by the end of March and will require some overnight closures while the work takes place.

A585 Thornton-Cleveleys

Temporary traffic lights and lane closures are in place on the A585 between West Drive and Bourne Way in Thornton-Cleveleys while work is carried out to covert the road into a dual carriageway. The project is due to be completed in December.

A590 Lindale Hill

Work is taking place to resurface the westbound side of the A590 around Lindale Hill, between Meathop Roundabout and the junction with the B5721 Cartmel Road. A lane closure will be in place along the westbound carriageway during the day with a 40mph speed limit past the roadworks. At times overnight, drivers may be held at temporary traffic lights and asked to follow a contractor’s vehicle at 10mph.

A5103 Manchester

Sections of the A5103 Princess Parkway and Princess Road in South Manchester will be closed overnight for resurfacing and other maintenance work. The scheme affects the route between Barlow Moor Road at West Didsbury and Sale Road at Northenden. Each side of the road will each be closed for up to three nights between 9pm and 5am, and the work is due to be completed in November.
