Planned roadworks in the North East – summary for Monday 24 to Sunday 30 August

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 21 August but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

A1 Junction 56 Barton to Junction 51 Leeming Bar

There will be phases of overnight lane closures and full carriageway closures while work takes place to upgrade the road to motorway standards. There will also be narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction 24 hours a day, and a lane closure on the junction 51 roundabout between 9am and 4pm until the end of October. The A1 will be closed overnight, from 8pm until 6am, between Scotch Corner and junction 56 on Monday 24 August. The northbound carriageway will also be closed overnight between junction 50 and Scotch Corner, and southbound between Scotch Corner and junction 51, from Tuesday 25 until Thursday 27 August. The project is due to be completed by spring 2017.

A1 Lamesley to Swalwell, Gateshead

Narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit are in place while work is carried out to upgrade the section of the A1 past Gateshead. There are also overnight lane closures between 8pm and 6am. The A1 will also be closed overnight in both directions between junctions 67 and 73 from Monday 24 until Thursday 27 August. The closures will take place between 8pm and 6am, with diversions in place. The project is due to be completed by spring 2016.

A1 Alnwick, Northumberland

The southbound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for bridge refurbishment work on Monday 24 August. A lane closure will remain in place in both directions until Friday 28 August. The project is due to be completed in September.

A1 Stannington, Northumberland

Traffic will run in both directions, in a contraflow system, on the southbound carriageway while work takes place to resurface the northbound carriageway until 6am on Friday 28 August. The project is due to be completed in September.

A1 Scotswood, Newcastle Western Bypass

The northbound entry slip road will be closed for maintenance work between 8pm and 6am on Tuesday 25 August.

A1 Swalwell, Newcastle Western Bypass

The southbound exit slip road will be closed overnight for maintenance work between 8pm and 6am on Monday 24 August.

A19 Holystone Interchange, North Tyneside

The north and southbound carriageway will be closed between 8pm and 6am on Tuesday 25 August for bridge repair work. There will also be additional slip road, lane and carriageway closures later in the summer, with the project due to be completed in September.

A66 Bowes to Cumbrian Border, County Durham

There will be a contraflow system in place, with traffic running in both directions on the eastbound carriageway, while work takes place to resurface the westbound side of the A66. The project is due to be completed by Wednesday 26 August.

A66 Greta Bridge, County Durham

There will be a lane closure on the eastbound side of the A66 between 10am and 3pm on Wednesday 26 August while new signs are installed.
