ONGOING WORK

A1(M) J6, Welwyn: Junction improvements

Work to improve the junction at A1(M) junction 6 is continuing. Work will take place on weeknights between 10pm and 5am and during the work there will be 24 hour hard shoulder closures and overnight lane closures past the works.

M1 northbound, J13, Bedford to J14 for Milton Keynes: Surveys

Work to carry out drainage and pavement surveys on the northbound M1 between junctions 13 and 14 continues. The work will be carried out between 9pm and 6am on weeknights and is planned to be completed by the end of August. During the work there will be a hard shoulder and lane 1 closure.

We are building a new 2.9-mile, two-lane dual carriageway running from north of Dunstable and joining the M1 at a new junction 11a, south of Chalton. Main construction started in March 2015.

We have started work on the new junction on the M1. Three lanes will remain open on each carriageway during the work, with traffic running on the hard shoulder and lanes 1 and 2. The traffic management, including safety barriers, signs, CCTV and average speed cameras, will stay in place throughout the junction construction work, which will be carried out in phases and should be finished in spring 2017 as the scheme nears completion. There will also be overnight lane closures when required, which will be clearly signposted.

On the A5, travelling from the A505, roundabout traffic has been realigned and now runs on the east side of the carriageway on one lane in each direction to allow for embankment work.

From 17 August, we will have three-way traffic lights at the A5/A505 roundabout, north of Dunstable, to allow construction of the western verge for a cycleway and footway. And on Sundon Road and Luton Road (B579) there will be two-way traffic signals Monday to Friday between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm.

Work on the major improvement is due to complete in spring 2017. For more information, visit the scheme page.

A14 Girton to Histon (junctions 31 to 32): Lane gain scheme

Work to improve slip roads onto the M11 and A14 and to add an additional lane on the A14 in each direction between Girton and Histon was completed on Friday 10 April, with all three lanes in both directions now open with a reduced speed limit of 50mph.

We are carrying out some finishing off works, which include landscaping, street lighting and fully resurfacing the road between junctions 31 and 32.

On Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August there will be a closure of the eastbound A14 between junctions 31 and 32 between 8pm and 6 am.

Between Monday 24 and Thursday 27 August the eastbound A14 between junctions 31 and 32 and westbound access at both junctions 36 and 32 will be closed overnight between 8pm and 6am.

Highways England is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

  • Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.
  • Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
  • Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
  • Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
  • Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.
  • Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
