Planned roadworks in Kent and Sussex: Weekly summary for Monday 10 November – Sunday 16 November 2014

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of 07 November but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M20 junction 5 to 6, Maidstone, Kent: Joint replacement and Drainage

The coastbound distributor road will be closed and there will be lane closures on the coastbound main carriageway and a reduced speed limit of 50mph from Monday 10 November. Road users wishing to join the M20 at junction 5 will be diverted via junction 4. Road users wishing to exit at junction 6 will be diverted via junction 7.

M20 junctions 10 to 11 Smeeth, Ashford, Kent: Slope stabilisation

A lane one closure and a 50mph speed limit will continue to be in place on the coastbound carriageway 24/7 until the middle of December.

M23 junctions 8 to 9, Coopers Hill, West Sussex: Viaduct replacement

Two lanes will be closed and a 40mph temporary speed limit in placein both directions overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for three nights from Monday 10 November.

A2 Ebbsfleet to Bean, Kent: Carriageway resurfacing

The Londonbound carriageway will be closedbetween the slip roads at the Bean Interchange overnight, between 10pm and 5am, from Monday 10 November until early December. Work on Friday and Saturday will be between 11pm and 6am. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the exit and entry slip roads.

A21 Barnetts Wood, Tonbridge, Kent: Bridge deconstruction

A lane one closure will continue to be in place in both directions each night, between 8pm and 6am, until Friday 14 November. The A21 will be closed in both directions between Morley’s roundabout and the Vauxhall interchange from 8pm on Saturday 15 November until 5am on Monday 17 November. The laybys will be closed in both directions from 10pm on Friday 14 November until 6pm on Monday 17 November.

A21 Swiftsden, Hurst Green, East Sussex: Pavement Investigation

Lane closures, a 30mph speed limit and two way traffic lights will be in place overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for two nights from Wednesday 12 November.

A21 Whatlington to Seddlescombe, East Sussex: Drainage

The lay-by will be closed on the Londonbound carriageway adjacent to Marley Lane 24/7 from 8am on Monday 10 November. Work is due to finish Saturday 6 December.

A23 Handcross to Warninglid, West Sussex: Major Improvement

Both carriageways will be closed between Handcross and Warninglid overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 10 November to Friday 21 November, weeknights only. Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the A264, A24 and the A272. The Londonbound Handcross exit and entry slip roads will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, for two nights from Thursday 13 November. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via A264, A24 and the A272.

A249 Sheppey Crossing, Kent: Carriageway resurfacing

The Londonbound carriageway will be closed from 8pm on Saturday 15 November until 6pm on Sunday 16 November. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the Kingsferry Bridge.

A259 Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex: Street lighting

Lane closures will continue to be in place in both directions, between 9.30am and 3pm, between Belle Hill and De La Warr Road, until Wednesday 12 November.

A27 Southover to Kingston, East Sussex: Resurfacing

The westbound carriageway will continue to be closed each night, between 8pm and 6am, from Monday 10 November, between Southerham roundabout and the Falmer interchange. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A26, A259 and A23. Work is due to finish Monday 17 November.

A27 Southwick Tunnel, Worthing, West Sussex: Maintenance

The tunnel will be closed in both directions overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for two nights from Friday 14 November. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A270 and the A293.

A27 Westdene, East Sussex:Pavement Investigation

Lane closures will be in place on the eastbound exit and entry slip roads overnight, between 8pm and 6am, at Red Hill from Monday 10 November for two nights.

A27 Worthing, West Sussex: Lighting replacement

Lane closures and temporary traffic lights will continue to be in place between the Grove Lodge roundabout and Lyons Farm, between 9.30am and 3.30pm and between 8pm and 6am, (Monday to Friday only) until Friday 12 December.

A27 Whyke Roundabout, Chichester, West Sussex: Drainage Improvement

Narrow lanes will continue to be in place during the daytime with lane closures in place in both directions overnight (Monday to Friday only), between 8pm and 6am, around the Whyke Roundabout. Work is due to be completed in early December.

Safety at roadworks

The Highways Agency is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads.For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

  • Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.
  • Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
  • Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
  • Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
  • Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.
  • Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
