Planned roadworks in Central Southern England: weekly summary for Monday 26 October to Sunday 1 November 2015

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of 23 October but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M3 junctions 2 (M25) to 4a Farnborough, Hampshire: smart motorway improvement

Work to reduce congestion and improve journey times continues this week with narrow lanes, a contraflow and a 50mph speed limit in place on both carriageways between junctions 2 and 4a, with a free recovery service operating 24 hours a day until the end of 2016.

The southbound carriageway between junctions 2 and 4 including the M25 clockwise and anti-clockwise link roads to the M3 southbound and the junction 3 entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 5.30am, on Monday 26 October and on Thursday 29 October. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A30 and A331.

The southbound carriageway between junctions 2 and 3 including the M25 clockwise and anti-clockwise link roads to the M3 southbound will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 5.30am, from Tuesday 27 October for 2 nights and from Friday 30 October for 2 nights. The closure on Friday will be between 10pm and 6am and on Saturday between 9pm and 6am. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A30 and A322.

M3 junction 6 Basingstoke, Hampshire: Black Dam improvement

Work to reduce congestion and improve journey times across the Black Dam roundabout near Basingstoke continues this week. Narrow lanes, a 30mph speed limit and off-peak lane closures are in place on the approaches and around the roundabout.

M3 junctions 6 Basingstoke to 9 Winchester, Hampshire: bridge waterproofing

Work to improve safety by replacing the bridge’s waterproof surface and expansion joints begins this week. Narrow lanes, a contraflow and a 50mph speed limit will be in place in both directions between junctions 6 and 9 until mid-December.

Work to maintain road user safety by replacing communications technology continues this week. The southbound link road between the M3 and eastbound M27 will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 26 October for 8 nights (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M27 junction 2.

M4 junction 8/9 Maidenhead, Berkshire: structure survey

Work to improve journeys by carrying out structure surveys starts this week. Lane closures will be in place on all approaches to the junction (M4 slip roads, A404M and A308M) and on the roundabout overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 26 October for 8 nights (Monday to Friday only).

M4 junction 10 Wokingham, Berkshire: junction improvement

Work to ease congestion by widening the slip roads at the junction continues this week. The slip roads and merge onto the A329(M) Reading-bound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 26 October for 5 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A329(M) Wokingham-bound carriageway and the Coppid Beech roundabout. Work is due to be complete by the end of October.

M4 junction 12 Theale, Berkshire: street lighting

Work to maintain safety and improve journeys by replacing street lighting continues this week. Lane closures will be in place on the eastbound carriageway overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 26 October for 5 nights.

M4 junctions 13 Chieveley to 14 Hungerford, West Berkshire: drainage maintenance

Work to maintain safety and improve journeys by replacing sections of the drainage system near Chieveley continues this week. Sections of the hard shoulder on both carriageways will be closed 24 hours a day and lane closures will be in place on both carriageways overnight, between 10pm and 6am, until Friday 6 November (Monday to Friday only).

M27 junction 3 Nursling, Hampshire: junction improvement

Work to improve journeys and reduce congestion continues this week. The M271 southbound (between the A3057 Romsey Road roundabout and junction 3 of the M27), and the M271 northbound (between M271 junction 1 and M27 junction 3) will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 4am, from Monday 26 October for 10 nights (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 2.

M27 junctions 8 Bursledon to 11 Fareham, Hampshire: carriageway resurfacing

Work to improve road user safety by resurfacing the M27 eastbound carriageway takes place this week. The eastbound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Wednesday 28 October for 3 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A27.

M275 Portsmouth, Hampshire: vehicle detector equipment installation

Work to improve road user safety by installing vehicle detector equipment in the M275 carriageway takes place this week. The link road between the M275 northbound carriageway from Tipner, and the M275 southbound link road from M27 junction 12 will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 26 October for 2 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A2030.

A3 Surrey: slip road vegetation maintenance

Work to improve road user safety by managing vegetation on northbound slip roads in Surrey takes place this week. The work will be carried out overnight, between 9pm and 6am on various slip roads:

  • Monday 26 October: The Hog’s back entry and Dennis exit slip roads will be closed overnight
  • Tuesday 27 October: the University exit and entry and Stoke entry slip roads will be closed overnight
  • Wednesday 28 October: the Send entry and Burpham exit slip roads will be closed overnight
  • Friday 30 October: the Thursley exit and entry and Shackleford exit and entry slip roads will be closed overnight

Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the next available junction.

A3 Hindhead Tunnel, Surrey: routine maintenance

Work to maintain safety through the Hindhead Tunnel will take place this week. The southbound bore will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, from Monday 26 October for 3 nights. A clearly signed diversion with a 50mph speed limit will be in place via a contraflow in the northbound bore.

Highways England and the emergency services will be carrying out an emergency training exercise overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Thursday 29 October. The tunnel will be fully closed and clearly signed diversions will be in place via the A31 and A325.

A34 Milton interchange, Oxfordshire: junction improvement

Work to improve journey times and safety by improving the layout of the Milton interchange continues this week. Narrow lanes and a temporary speed limit will be in place 24/7. Work is due to be completed in spring 2016. In addition, the both carriageways of the A34 at the junction will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 26 October for 2 nights to allow the newly constructed bridge deck to be resurfaced. A clearly signed diversion for southbound traffic will be in place via Milton, round the roundabout and back on at the other side. A clearly signed diversion for northbound traffic will be in place via the Chilton Interchange through Rowstock and back on at the Milton Interchange.

A34 Botley to Hinksey Hill, Oxford, Oxfordshire: drainage survey

Work to improve journeys by carrying out drainage surveys continues this week. A lane on the southbound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 26 October for 5 nights.

A303 Longparish to Andover, Hampshire: sign maintenance

Work to improve road user safety by replacing signs along the A303 takes place this week. A lane on the westbound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Wednesday 28 October for 3 nights.

A404 Maidenhead, Berkshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by resurfacing a section of the southbound carriageway near Burchetts Green continues this week. The carriageway from the A308 Bisham Roundabout to the A404(M) junction 9b will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Wednesday 28 October. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M40, M25 and M4. Non-motorway traffic should use the A4155 through Henley-on-Thames and A4130 to Maidenhead.
