Plan ahead for major M180 closures for 13 miles of resurfacing work

Drivers are reminded that major resurfacing work will take place on the M180 in August. The Highways Agency will be fully closing sections of the M180 over a number of days and nights in order to carry out essential carriageway maintenance and safety improvement work.

Work to resurface 13 miles of the motorway between Doncaster and Scunthorpe will begin on 1 August. Drivers are asked to plan their journeys around the area during the work and details of the diversion routes can be found at the Highways Agency website

Highways Agency Project Manager Steven Wright said:

We acknowledge that closing the M180 for long periods will be disruptive to drivers and residents. However, we have planned the work carefully to minimise the disruption to drivers while maximising the amount of work taking place. If we were to carry out the planned work during night time closures only, the resurfacing work would take a number of months to complete.

By working around the clock, we will be able to substantially resurface the length of the M180 from its junction with the M18 near Doncaster all the way through to junction 4 near Scunthorpe, in a period of 4 weeks. We will also provide new bridge joints, white lining and road studs and use the closures to carry out other general maintenance and inspection work. This will mean we should not have to carry out further construction work in this area for a long time.

The work will be taking place in 7 phases, with no work taking place over the August bank holiday weekend:

  • 1 to 4 August – work will take place at the M180 Ings roundabout (M180 junction 0 / M18 junction 5). There will be a full weekend closure from 8pm on Friday night until 6am on Monday morning – work will take place 24 hours a day. Over the weekend the carriageway will be resurfaced, new road markings will be installed and bridge joints will be replaced.
  • 4 to 6 August – work will take place on the eastbound M180 between junction 1 and junction 2. Work will begin at 6am on 4 August and one lane will be closed during the day until 8pm. After 8pm the eastbound carriageway will be closed until 6am on 6 August. During the closures 1.6 miles of the eastbound concrete carriageway will be resurfaced and repairs will be made to the carriageway movement joints. Road markings, road studs and traffic monitoring loops will also be replaced.
  • 6 to 11 August – work will take place on the eastbound M180 between junction 2 and junction 3. The eastbound carriageway will be closed from 6am on 6 August until 6am on 11 August. During the closures 4.9 miles of the eastbound concrete carriageway will be resurfaced, repairs will also be made to the to the carriageway movement joints. Road markings, road studs and traffic monitoring loops will be replaced.
  • 11 to 15 August – work will take place on the westbound M180 between junction 3 and junction 4. The westbound carriageway will be closed overnight from 9pm until 5.30am. During the closures 2.6 miles of the westbound concrete carriageway will be resurfaced. Road markings, road studs and traffic monitoring loops will also be replaced. The overnight closures (11-15 August) have been scheduled midway through the work in order to provide drivers and residents with a number of night-time closures only before the next phase of 24 hour closures begin on 15 August.
  • 15 to 20 August – work will take place on the westbound M180 between junction 3 and junction 2. Work will begin at 6am on 15 August and one lane will be closed during the day until 8pm. After 8pm the westbound carriageway will be closed until 6am on 20 August. During the closures 4.9 miles of the westbound carriageway will be repaired and repairs will be made to the to the carriageway movement joints. Road markings, road studs and bridge joints will also be replaced.
  • 20 to 22 Aug – work will take place on the westbound M180 between junction 2 and junction 1. The westbound carriageway will be closed overnight from 8pm until 6am. During the closures 0.9 miles of the westbound concrete carriageway will be resurfaced. Road markings, road studs and traffic monitoring loops will also be replaced. Bridge Joints will also be replaced.
  • 26 to 28 August – work will take place on the westbound M180 between junction 3 and junction 4. The westbound carriageway will be closed overnight from 9pm until 5.30am.
