Press release

Overnight closures of M1 between junctions 19 and 16 for barrier work

A series of overnight closures will be taking place at various locations on the M1 between junctions 19 in Leicestershire and 16 in Northamptonshire in December.

The closures are part of the Highways Agency’s ongoing work to install a rigid central reserve barrier.

The following restrictions will be in place between 10pm and 6am:

  • The southbound carriageway of the M1 will be closed between junction 18 and junction 16 from Monday 1 December to Wednesday 3 December. Traffic will be diverted from junction 18 via the A5 and A45 to rejoin the motorway at junction 16.
  • From Thursday 4 to Saturday 6 and again on the nights of Monday 8 and Wednesday 10 December the northbound carriageway will be closed between the same junctions. Traffic will follow the same diversion but in reverse.
  • On Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 December the southbound carriageway will be shut from junction 19 to 18. Traffic will be diverted from junction 20 along the A4303, A425 and A5 to rejoin the M1 at junction 18.

Highways Agency Project Manager Asad Khan said:

The closures are needed so we can install ducting across the carriageway. The work will be carried out at night to minimise disruption and we advise road users to allow extra time for their journeys.
