The British High Commissioner to Australia, His Excellency Mr Paul Madden CMG, recently announced that Michael Smith, columnist and senior writer at the Australian Financial Review, had been awarded the fourth UK Business Journalism Placement.

Michael will spend 10 days working from the Financial Times’ London office, researching and writing business stories for an Australian audience.

After reviewing the applications, Mr Madden said:

“I was impressed by all of the applications we received, from a wide range of Australian business journalists, but Michael’s application stood out as it showed an excellent understanding of a broad range of topics that contribute to the important Australia-UK business relationship. I look forward to reading the stories that Michael writes while at the FT and assisting him where needed.”

Ms Nicole Backo, British Airways Regional Commercial manager for South West Pacific, said:

“We’re delighted to be able to provide Michael with a truly British experience the minute he steps onboard our Boeing 777-300. British Airways is the only European airline to be able to do this from Australia.

“Michael will travel in style in our Club World cabin where he will enjoy a fully flat bed for complete comfort to sleep, eat or relax. He will also be able to enjoy the very best in international cuisine along with expertly sourced wines.

“Arriving into London’s award-winning Heathrow Terminal 5, we want Michael to arrive refreshed and relaxed ready to hit the ground running with his placement in London.”

Michael will travel to London Business Class with British Airways, flying in and out of Heathrow’s award-winning Terminal 5. His Australian domestic flights, accommodation and subsistence costs will be covered by the British High Commission.
