Lord Mayor of the City of London visits Morocco

Alderman Fiona Woolf, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, paid a visit to Morocco from 17-19 June. She was accompanied by a major delegation of British businessmen and women. During her visit to Morocco, the Lord Mayor of the City of London was received by HisMajesty King Mohammed VI at the Royal Palace of Tetouan. She also attended the signing ceremony of three agreements between London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) and Casablanca Stock Exchange (CSE), which were signed by Xavier Rolet for LSEG and Karim Hajji for CSE.

The Lord Mayor opened on 17 June the day’s trading on the Casablanca Stock Exchange before attending a meeting at the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM) of British and Moroccan business leaders to explore scope for intensifying economic partnerships. She also called, among others, on the Minister of Economy and Finance and officials from the Moroccan Central Bank. And, as only the second women to have held her office in over 800 years, the Lord Mayor gave a speech to a group of female Moroccan entrepreneurs on the importance of women in leadership roles in business.

The aim of the Lord Mayor’s visit was to build understanding between the British business community and their counterparts in Morocco and to explore new opportunities to work together to improve infrastructure and the production of clean energy and to further develop a sustainable and profitable financial services industry.

The Lord Mayor of London is an important role, which has existed for over 800 years. Today, the Lord Mayor’s primary role is to represent the City of London and its financial services industry.
