Lord Mayor of the City of London visits Kampala

The Lord Mayor spent three days in Uganda with a high-level trade delegation.

The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Rt Hon Fiona Woolf, visited Uganda, accompanied by a high level trade delegation, from 11 to13 September 2014. The City of London is the UK’s financial hub, and the Lord Mayor of the City of London serves as a global ambassador, supporting and promoting the City as the world leader in international finance and business services. This was the first visit to Uganda by a Lord Mayor of the City of London, and underlines the growing importance of the Ugandan market to the United Kingdom.

The Lord Mayor met the Ministers of Finance, Works and Energy, the Governor of the Bank of Uganda and the Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), as well as opening workshops on investment opportunities and financing options and Private Public Partnerships. She was also the guest of honour at a reception hosted by the British High Commissioner, HE Alison Blackburne, and attended by representatives of the Ugandan government and prominent members of the private sector.

During her visit, the Lord Mayor announced details of further initiatives to develop closer bilateral ties and build Ugandan capacity, including a Mansion House Scholarship for a future Ugandan leader to complete Masters studies at a top UK university.

The Lord Mayor of the City of London is the official title of the head of the City of London Corporation, which provides services for the Square Mile, also known as the City of London, London’s financial district. The Lord Mayor has an equivalent rank to members of the UK Cabinet. A dedicated ambassador, supporting and promoting the City as the world leader in international finance and business services, the Lord Mayor travels extensively, in liaison with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and British Embassies and High Commissions overseas, fostering goodwill and promoting British trade, particularly the markets and services of the City.
