The IEA held its biennial ministerial meeting on 19-20 November, chaired by Taner Yildiz, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. The UK was represented by Baroness Verma. The meeting delivered two particularly significant outcomes: 1) a joint declaration between the IEA and six major emerging economies (Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa) on pursuing deeper co-operation on energy security.

This is an important step forward in engagement with a group of increasingly important energy players; and 2) a ministerial statement in support of the ongoing climate negotiations in Warsaw, highlighting the importance of taking urgent action to tackle climate change and recognising the importance of the energy sector – which accounts for two-thirds of total emissions – to any potential solution.
