FCO Director for South Asia, Neil Crompton and British Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Robbie Bulloch, visited a demining site in Jaffna on last week, ahead of the UN International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, observed globally on 4 April each year. This day aims to raise awareness about landmines and mark progress toward their eradication.

In 2008, the British Government pledged to spend £30 million on mine action before 2013. £3 million of this (approximately 600 million rupees) has been spent in Sri Lanka, where British charity, the HALO Trust, have been clearing mines in various parts of the country since 2010.
