Interception of Communications Commissioner

Appointment of an Interception of Communications Commissioner announced.

The Prime Minister has approved the appointment of The Right Honourable Sir Anthony May as Interception of Communications Commissioner.

The appointment will take effect on 1 January 2013.

Notes for Editors

Sir Anthony May was called to the Bar by Inner Temple in 1967 and took Silk in 1979. He was appointed to the High Court in 1991 and to the Court of Appeal in 1997. He was the Vice-President of the Queen’s Bench Division from 2002-08 and the Deputy Head of Civil Justice 2000-03, and a member of the Civil Procedure Rule Committee (2000-03). He was the President of the Queen’s Bench Division from 2008 to his retirement in July 2011.

The responsibility of the Commissioner is to keep under review the issue of interception warrants and the adequacy of the arrangements for ensuring the product of interception is properly handled.
