Indonesia Celebrates Leaders of The Future with Award Ceremony

British Ambassador Mark Canning hosted a reception to celebrate the award of 21 Chevening Scholarships to outstanding Indonesian scholars.

The prestigious Scholarships are awarded to candidates with leadership potential who are likely to become key decision makers of the future. The award enables the scholars to study postgraduate courses at universities across the UK. Seventy guests gathered to celebrate the awards which was held on 27 August 2013.

Ambassador Mark Canning said:

I am delighted to be presenting the awards to our new Chevening scholars. The Chevening programme exemplifies the strength of the bilateral relationship between the UK and Indonesia and our desire to support gifted Indonesian students to study in the UK’s top universities. It is one of our biggest scholarship programmes in the world, and its Indonesian alumni are contributing to their country in many different fields – business, government, civil society and many other areas.

Dyah Kusumaningsih, a Regional Tax Officer in West Java, is going to study Tax Law at, Queen Mary University in London. She said, “I chose to study in the UK, a country with world-class universities with a wider major of studies.”. She added that the in-depth teaching method encourages students to study harder for a better result. Dyah hopes to obtain new knowledge that will benefit both her career and the people of Indonesia.

Also attending the award ceremony were a number of Chevening alumni who received a Chevening Scholarship during the 30 years the scholarship programme has been running. The alumni network offers returning Chevening scholars an exclusive opportunity to access British Embassy events and networking opportunities.

The pre-Departure reception for this year’s scholars comes just days before the application window opens for the next selection of Chevening candidates. Applications are welcomed from 1 September – 8 November via the online portal

About Chevening Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded mainly by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The Chevening programme began in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international scheme. Scholars come from over 120 countries worldwide and 600 scholarships were awarded in 2013-2014.
