Contractors for Highways England will be resurfacing nearly 2.5 miles of the A66 Long Newton to Elton starting on Monday 22 August.

On Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 August, between 8pm and 6am, traffic will be led through the roadworks around Long Newton junction for around 500 metres in convoy by a contractor’s vehicle.

The roadworks will then be removed from the junction at 6am on Wednesday 24 August until 8pm on Tuesday 30 August for the bank holiday weekend.

From 8pm on Tuesday 30 August there will be a full overnight closure of the eastbound carriageway until the project is completed. The work will be carried out between 8pm and 6am.

Highways England project manager Chris Corcoran said:

When complete, this project will provide drivers with safer and smoother journeys along this stretch of the A66 near Darlington.

Every effort is being made to ensure disruption to traffic and local residents is kept to a minimum, and work will be suspended over the bank holiday weekend.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place while the eastbound carriageway is closed via Mill Lane, the A67 and Durham Lane.

The project is expected to be completed by Friday 16 September, depending on the weather.
