Contractors for Highways England are resurfacing the lanes around the roundabout and will be repainting the white lines as part of the work that will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am.

The work is expected to be completed by Saturday 15 October, depending on reasonable weather conditions.

Highways England project manager Steve Bishop said:

This project will provide drivers with smoother and safer journeys along this stretch of the A1 at Kenton Bar.

Every effort is being made to ensure disruption to traffic is kept to a minimum and we are working closely with Newcastle Airport. We are carrying out as much work as we can overnight while traffic levels are at their lowest.

The work will take place in 2 phases. The first phase will involve closing the roundabout, the A1 northbound entry and exit slip roads as well as the entry and exit slip roads to the A696 and the B6918.

The A1 southbound entry and exit slip roads will operate as normal during this phase. Clearly signed diversions will be in place with a diversion via A1 Kingston Park junction for people travelling to the airport.

As part of the second phase the roundabout will be closed as well as the A1 southbound exit slip road and the entry and exit slip roads to the A696 and the B6918.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place.
