Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Hugo García, who is this year’s Chevening Scholar, shared his expectations for the year ahead: “I was having a hard time deciding which university I should apply to for my Master’s degree. In one of my daily and obsessive web searches for references and rankings of Universities, a picture in my browser grabbed my attention. A student relaxing under a tree in a garden next to a beautiful building. The picture was nothing special, but the phrase at the bottom of the picture caught my eye. “Having the opportunity to read a book under the apple tree that led to the discovery of Newton’s “Theory of gravity”, priceless… Love to be at Cambridge”. In that moment I knew that my search for a university was over.
Everything related to Cambridge fascinated me. What seems to be ordinary in other universities, in Cambridge tends to be extraordinary, even a simple tree has a story to tell. The facts talk by themselves. The No 1 University in The Guardian 2013 rankings, and one of the three most targeted universities by top employers. Nevertheless, what really attracted me to Cambridge was its tradition and excellence. It is hard to imagine a more demanding academic and intellectual activity than studying Law at the world’s best-ranked university where Law has been taught since the fourteenth century. Simply, I could never go wrong choosing Cambridge. But it still was a dream. The Chevening Scholarship was what made it real. My dream is becoming true now, thanks to the FCO!”
