Highways England organising public exhibitions on M5 scheme

Public and businesses are invited to find out more about a major repair scheme taking place on the M5 near Oldbury in the West Midlands.

Highways England is hosting three public exhibitions this week to advise people about their journeys while work to improve the Oldbury viaduct - a structure which was built in the early 1970s - takes place.

Waterproofing under the road surface between junctions 1 for West Bromwich and junction 2 for Oldbury has reached the end of its serviceable life, exposing the reinforced concrete structure to the effects of water damage.

The 18-month project between the two junctions of the motorway, starts next month.

Highways England project manager Alastair Warnes, said:

By maintaining this key corridor Highways England is delivering a huge investment in Oldbury that will support economic growth locally and in the wider West Midlands.

These exhibitions are a useful way for people to find out more about the essential work being carried out.

We have been planning this scheme for a considerable amount of time and are encouraging traffic to take alternative routes such as the M42 and M6 to keep congestion to a minimum on the M5 and surrounding roads while the work takes place.

The events will take place on:

  • 23 March – Queens Square West Bromwich, B70 7NJ - 2:00pm to 5:00pm
  • 24 March – Sainsbury’s SavaCentre Oldbury Freeth St, Oldbury B69 3DB – 10:00am to 8:00pm
  • 25 March – The Hawthorns Stadium (West Bromwich Albion), Pennington Suite (2nd Floor - accessed via East Stand main reception), 10:00am to 4:00pm, West Midlands, United Kingdom, B71 4LF

Highways England is undertaking the work as part of a major government investment to build a modern and resilient road network.
