On 13 March, Minister for the Commonwealth Lord Howell attended the launch of the Commonwealth All-Party Parliamentary Group, chaired by Richard Graham MP.

Welcoming the launch of the APPG, Lord Howell said that the Commonwealth was a “necessary network of the 21st century” and highlighted the relationship between the Commonwealth’s values of democracy, human rights and good governance and the prosperity of the citizens of the Commonwealth.

The Group’s objectives are:

  • To ensure members are kept briefed by the Commonwealth Secretariat on developments to strengthen the Commonwealth network
  • To keep members fully aware of the range of non-parliamentary activities and programmes carried out under the Commonwealth brand, both on Governmental and non-governmental levels
  • To take advantage of opportunities of the developing Commonwealth network for Britain’s political and commercial activities, and for Britain’s general positioning in the new international landscape
