Commenting on the deteriorating security situation in Cote d’Ivoire, a Foreign Office spokesperson today said:

“We continue to be very concerned at the deteriorating security situation in Cote d’Ivoire, and condemn the recent violence against unarmed civilians.

The announcement by former President Gbagbo that he will nationalise the cocoa industry and threats to companies that their stock and assets will be seized are a further sign of desperation.

The UK government is clear that Mr Gbagbo has no legitimacy to make such announcements.”
