This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Alistair Burt, Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, made his second visit this year to Tunis on 12 September.

During his visit, Minister Burt met Prime Minister Laarayedh, Foreign Minister Jerandi, Rachid Gannouchi, Beji Caid el Sebsi and Nejib Chebbi. He discussed the ongoing political crisis and the prospects for a solution.

Speaking at the end of his visit, Mr Burt said:

“I am very pleased to be back in Tunis. Since my last visit in June I’ve been following developments in Tunisia very closely and have been in regular touch with political leaders from across the political spectrum. Today I wanted to hear firsthand about the ongoing negotiations and the prospects for a solution to the current crisis. I have emphasised to all leaders the importance of inclusive, constructive dialogue and the need for all sides to make the necessary compromises, if a solution is to be found. It is very important for Tunisia and the wider region that the transition is kept on track”.
