Contractors for Highways England will be carrying out the work on the northbound carriageway between junction 73 (Derwenthaugh) and junction 74 (Scotswood).

The lane will remain closed until the repairs to the bridge joint have been completed.

Highways England project manager Chris Corcoran said:

We need to carry out repairs to the bridge joints on Blaydonhaugh Viaduct Bridge. One lane on the A1 is in the process of being closed between the junctions and will remain closed until work has been completed.

This is essential maintenance work that will ensure the bridge can be used safely. We would like to thank drivers for their patience while we carry out this repair and we will reopen the lane as soon as it is safe to do so.
