The UK has announced its support for the candidacy of Malcolm Johnson for position of Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union for the term 2015 to 2019.
Every four years, the Member States of the ITU meet to set the Union’s general policies and agree its strategic plan for the following four years. They also elect the senior management team, members of Council and the Radio Regulations Board. This year in Busan, Republic of Korea, the UK will be supporting the candidacy of Malcolm Johnson for election as Deputy Secretary-General.
The United Kingdom attaches great importance to the work of the International Telecommunication Union. The Union plays a crucial role in the allocation of global radio spectrum and satellite orbits and in developing technical standards which ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect. It also carries out important work to improve access to ICTs to developing countries. This work is of vital importance to people around the world and will continue to be so in the future.
The next Deputy Secretary-General will need to have an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the wider issues facing the Union and the concerns of its diverse membership; combined with a clear strategic vision, proven management skills, and diplomacy. The UK believes that Malcolm has the credentials, experience and ability to carry out this role. Malcolm is well known within the ITU for contributing original ideas, developing them through consensus building, finding compromises in insoluble conflicts, being sensitive to the interests of the developing countries, and embracing the full range of technical, regulatory, procedural, and commercial factors that run through ITU activities.
