Eight Years of cooperation between the British museum and Egyptian museums
Delegation from the British Museum visits Egypt to celebrate eight years of partnership
Mr Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, is visiting Egypt with colleagues from the Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan and International Training Programme.
The British Museum team are here to celebrate the International Training Programme (ITP). The ITP has its origins in Egypt, when back in 2004 the British Museum hosted six curators from Egyptian museums for a six week training course in museum studies. In 2006 the programme widened to include colleagues from other areas of the Middle East, Asia and Africa and today the programme has an alumni of 161 past-participants from 24 different countries. In the past eight years of cooperation with the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, 36 Egyptian curators have been trained. They came from different areas in Egypt including Cairo, Alexandria, Menya, Beni Suef, Asuit, Luxor and Aswan.
This week, as well as enjoying a reception at the British Embassy for Egyptian ITP past-participants, the delegation has visited friends and colleagues in Cairo and Alexandria and held workshop on ‘Collaboration and Partnership across cultural institutions in Egypt’ at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation.
