Following the targeted consultation, a change in the law is currently under consideration in Parliament. If the change is accepted, it will be possible to issue restricted licences to drivers with medical conditions for longer periods of up to 10 years. Currently, these drivers must renew their licences up to every 3 years. This change applies to holders of Group 1 driving licences (cars and motorcycles) where the medical condition may be suitable for a longer review period.

More than three quarters of drivers who reapply for their licence when their 3 year licence expires are found to be fit to drive and issued with a new licence. Issuing longer licences on a case-by-case basis where there is no risk to road safety will reduce unnecessary burden on the driver and the doctors who need to complete forms on their behalf.
