Coordinated approach to record keeping

We are leading an initiative to develop a common approach to record-keeping for all radioactive waste packages.

The first meetings with bodies responsible for waste production and packaging are taking place this month.

Records are essential elements of waste management. Suitable records must accompany each waste package, containing sufficient information to identify the package contents, define the circumstances under which the packages were produced and to detail all long term storage/disposal requirements.

With sites closing over time as they are decommissioned, it is vital that all the necessary information is gathered and collated now. That information has to remain available long after sites have been delicensed and returned to other uses.

We are is aiming to produce a draft specification by the end of the year.
