A well functioning government communications service that has, at its heart, transparency, professionalism and accountability, is a cornerstone of a healthy and stable society. The more we invest in quality transparency and effective communication, the more it would provide return on investment for us. These were the central messages at the event that the Government of Macedonia organised to promote the support that the UK provides to the reform programme that Macedonia has embarked on.

Our Ambassador Charles Garrett signed today a Memorandum of Understanding with Robert Popovski, Minister for Communications, Transparency and Accountability in the Government of Macedonia marking the cooperation. He said:

Effective communication by a government with the people it serves, is an important part of healthy democracy. And a government’s determination to strengthen democracy can often be measured by its commitment to good, open communication.

This programme is being implemented by the UK Government Communications Service International, body of the UK Government Communications Service with co-operation of the Institute for Communication Studies from Macedonia.

The work in this programme ranges from strengthening the professional capability of Government communicators, improving internal communications, communicating the key policies to the citizens, developing channels to hear what the citizens think about the work of Government as well as evaluate if the message of the Government mirrors the understanding of the citizens.

The British Embassy has a long legacy of working with the Macedonian society helping them in structural reforms. Our programme portfolio includes work with the Government, Parliament and civil society on issues that tackle good governance, transparency, accountability, social cohesion and economic development.
