CNC launch Live Well programme
The CNC’s Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing (OHSW) team have launched a six-month lifestyle support programme to help staff to improve their health.
Erin Kyle-Davidson, Senior Solicitor, and Doug North, Health and Wellbeing Advisor.
The Live Well programme is designed to help staff set realistic goals and achieve lasting change through providing tailored support and expert guidance over a structured six-month period.
The programme starts with a 40-minute Lifestyle Health Assessment, which covers an in-depth overview of the individual’s overall health and allows the opportunity to discuss the goals they would like to achieve over the six-month programme, reflected in a personalised report.
Following the initial assessment, staff then receive regular check-ins with members of the Civil Nuclear Constabulary’s (CNC) OHSW team to provide support, advice and motivation, before a final review to assess their overall progress and reflect on their initial objectives.
First offered to police staff in January, the first three months of the programme has seen 34 members of staff undergo a Lifestyle Health Assessment, half of whom took up the offer of further support.
Anecdotal feedback has included increases in exercise, activity, reduction in anxiety, better nutritional habits, resistance training for muscle mass, improvements in sleep quality and quantity as well as improvements in clinical markers.
Julie Carlisle, Chief Information and Protective Security Officer, was one of the members of staff who took part in the programme. Speaking about the assessment, she said: “It was thorough and very helpful, with some good tips, but also very reassuring in terms of the things that I’m doing right and how I can make them even better. I came away happy that I’m in reasonable shape with no immediate health concerns, and full of plans to improve.”
Erin Kyle-Davidson, Senior Solicitor, also participated in the programme and emphasised how supportive and helpful the Health and Wellbeing Adviser was throughout the process, answering any queries she had about the results of the checks. She added: “I’d previously undergone a lifestyle assessment in 2023 which had encouraged me to be more generally active, so the Live Well programme offered a useful point of comparison to check I was on the right track and see the improvements to my health.”
Doug North, one of the Health and Wellbeing Advisors supporting staff throughout the programme, said: “The Live Well programme was created to allow staff to better understand their health though tests, conversational tools, sign posting to NHS cancer screening and a bespoke report. The difficult part in healthcare can sometimes be to affect the behaviours that influence our health, this is where the weekly or monthly support is invaluable to give guidance and motivation in the specific areas where it is required. Working in policing can be a demanding job and giving staff the chance to have this opportunity whilst at work has reflected positively with the people attending and running the programme.”
Assistant Chief Constable Kerry Smith, organisational lead for People and Culture, said: “The Live Well programme enables our staff to benefit from the expertise, support, and guidance of our Health and Wellbeing Advisors to set and achieve realistic goals and improve their overall health and wellbeing.”
The Live Well programme is the latest example of the CNC’s commitment to improving the health and wellbeing provision for its workforce. This reinforces the CNC’s commitment to the priorities of the Police Covenant, a national pledge specifically to recognise the bravery, commitment, and sacrifices of those who work or have worked in policing.
The Police Covenant, which the CNC signed in 2024, aims to ensure policing personnel across England and Wales are not disadvantaged due to the unique demands of their roles.
The CNC recognises the equal importance of delivering the CNC mission and the health and wellbeing of all employees. Officers already have elements of the Live Well programme included within their annual medical and additional elements for health surveillance.
The Live Well programme is complemented by the CNC’s suite of purpose-built gyms, which are available to all employees and supervised by a team of qualified Fitness Instructors. You can learn more about the benefits available to employees at the CNC and view our vacancies on the CNC Jobs website.
