Celebrating success – nominations open for Highways England awards
Highways England’s chief executive has called on its supply chain to enter the prestigious annual awards designed to champion safety and examples of excellence.
Last year the inaugural Highways England Awards attracted a raft of exciting entries that were improving and pushing the industry forward.
This year the company is looking to the awards to celebrate more activities which advance its imperatives of safety, customer service and delivery.
Nominations which open today are invited from individuals, teams, suppliers and the extended supply chain including small and medium enterprises.
Highways England chief executive Jim O’Sullivan said:
Now more than ever, at Highways England we are challenging our own teams and supply chain to achieve more for our customers. We focus our efforts around our three imperatives – safety, customer, and delivery – and seek out ways to improve and innovate in these areas.
This is the second year of these awards. They provide a platform to celebrate the achievements of the people who work in our industry and to share examples of excellence.
I encourage you to apply and seek recognition and reward for the people who achieve great things for us. By sharing knowledge and best practise we can all help each other to continually improve. I know we have committed, talented, and motivated people in our company and supply chain and last year we were delighted with the entries that demonstrated their passion and skill. This year judges will be looking for nominations that reflect the very best in business and the highest standards in industry.
The 2019 winners included the WJ Group - the company responsible for an innovative piece of equipment that helps to keep roadworkers safe and disruption to motorists to a minimum.
Traditionally, to ensure the work to install the studs can be done safely, two lanes of the road, and sometimes a whole carriageway, need to be closed, with the resulting disruption for drivers.
But the new machine does the job with just one lane closure, leaving extra space for drivers to get past. Now the company behind the machine is urging others to enter the awards describing them as a ‘game-changer’ for the industry.

The closing date for entries is 6 December 2019 at 5pm. The awards ceremony will be held at the ICC, Birmingham on 30 April 2020. The winner of the company’s prestigious Chairman’s Award will also be announced.
