Canon Residentiary and Precentor in the Cathedral Church of St Paul.

The Queen has approved Reverend Canon Michael Hans Joachim Hampel's appointment to a Residentiary Canonry of St Paul's Cathedral.

The Queen has approved that the Reverend Canon Michael Hans Joachim Hampel, MA, FRSA, Canon and Precentor of St Edmundsbury Cathedral and Sub-Dean of St Edmundsbury Cathedral in the diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, be appointed to a Residentiary Canonry of St Paul’s Cathedral in succession to the Reverend Canon Lucy Clare Winkett, MA, ARCM.

Notes for the Editors

The Reverend Canon Michael Hampel (aged 43) was Curate at Whitworth with Spennymoor, in the diocese of Durham, from 1993 to 1997. From 1997 to 2002 he was Minor Canon Precentor and Sacrist Durham Cathedral. From 2002 to 2004 he was Senior Tutor St Chad’s College Durham. Since 2004 he has been Canon Residentiary at St Edmundsbury Cathedral and Sub Dean since 2008.

His interests include theology and literature, Shakespeare, mid-twentieth century Anglican writers such as Dorothy L Sayers and TS Eliot, the Anglican choral tradition, light opera, theatre and cinema, the contemporary novel, and restaurant criticism.
