The conference was also an opportunity for female journalists to share their stories of working in media.

Joanna Reid, the head of the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) during the conference.

Female journalists from across Pakistan participated in a multimedia training workshop and a conference for International Women’s Day, organised by the British High Commission and the Media Training and Research Centre (MTRC).

The workshop was held to build the capacity of multimedia journalists in new media technology from cities across Pakistan, including Multan, Bahawalpur, Swat, Mardan, Kohat, Quetta, Peshawar, DI Khan and Gilgit.

The conference was also an opportunity for female journalists to share their stories of working in media. They also shared their experiences of issues like online harassment and career progression.

Joanna Reid, the head of the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), said:

It is really encouraging to see these young, talented and ambitious female journalists today speaking up about their unique experiences of working in the media across Pakistan.

Journalism is incomplete when half your people have no one representing their voice. Empower women, equip them with the right skills and give them choices, and journalism in Pakistan will reach its potential.

Journalism is a vital part of any society, and this year we will step up our efforts to support journalists to thrive despite the challenges journalist face around the world.

The UK is working in Pakistan to remove barriers to women’s empowerment and participation to achieve inclusive growth. Through its wide range of programmes, the UK Aid has supported millions of girls in primary and secondary schools. The UK has also supported more than 1 million births attended by skilled health professionals to reduce infant and maternal mortality rate across Punjab and KP. Over 100,000 women have also been empowered to take an active role in politics and decision making across 45 districts of Punjab and KP.
