Today British High Commissioner Robert W Gibson welcomed to his Residence four successful Bangladeshis who have been awarded Chevening Scholarships to study in the UK this academic year.

This year’s Chevening Scholars are Mr Sabbir Ahmed, Ms Shadnaz Khan, Mr Al Asad Md Mahmudul Islam and Mr Mohammad Saifur Rahman.

The High Commissioner congratulated them ahead of their departure for the UK. He said, “The Chevening programme provides a unique opportunity for leaders of the future to build a global network of professional significance. It enables talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK. The UK is home to some of the world’s best education institutions, with four of the world’s top six universities, and is the study destination of choice for top international students. I offer my best wishes to all those going to the UK to study this year. I am delighted that so many Bangladeshi students continue to choose to study there, building relationships with their UK counterparts that strengthen the links between our countries. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Chevening programme. I hope that Chevening Scholarships will continue to attract the very brightest and best from Bangladesh.”

Shadnaz Khan will study Environmental, Economics and Climate Change at LSE, the London School of Economics. She was inspired to apply by family members and professors, who enjoyed studying in the UK. Ms Khan believes her study in the UK will help her to contribute more to development in her chosen sector when she returns to Bangladesh. She remarked, “There is a huge opportunity for Bangladesh in the energy sector. LSE is the best place for me to learn how we can make the most of this. Chevening Scholarships also offer more than the opportunity to study. I look forward to becoming a member of their unique, professional network.”

Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s prestigious global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organizations. The Scholarships offer the opportunity to study for a one-year master’s degree at any of the UK’s leading universities. They are awarded to outstanding established or emerging leaders across a wide range of fields, including politics, government, business, the media, the environment, civil society and academia among others.

Chevening scholars come from 118 countries worldwide and this year the Scholarships will support over 600 individuals.

Applications for Chevening 2014-2015 are now open and can be submitted online. Applicants should read the online guidance and demonstrate how they meet the Chevening selection criteria before submitting an application.
