Andrew Patrick said:

Today marks International Day of Democracy, a universal value based on the freely expressed will and determination of the people.

Over the last two years, the reform process in Burma has been remarkable in many ways and we commend the leadership shown by President Thein Sein. Many challenges still remain though and we encourage the government to continue on the right path towards full democracy for the benefit of all people in Burma.

The British Government is committed to supporting an open and transparent society, with respect for human rights for all. This year’s theme, “Strengthening Voices for Democracy”, is very relevant here in Burma and we look forward to working in partnership with civil society and government to achieve this.
