Package of reforms aimed at improving adoption support announced today by the Prime Minister.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The Prime Minister has announced a new package of support for people who want to adopt to ensure more children get a stable, loving home without delays.

Adoptive parents do an incredibly important job and the Government wants to make sure that they, and their children, get the best possible support.

Reforms include:

  • giving adoptive parents the same rights to pay and leave as birth parents;
  • giving adoptive parents the right to take time off work to meet the children they are set to adopt before they move in with family, helping to make the transition to a new family be as smooth as possible;
  • piloting personal budgets which will enable parents to have a freer hand in choosing the right support for their family.
