Baroness Curran was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero on 22 July 2026.

Education

Baroness Curran studied History and Economic History at the University of Glasgow.

Political career

Baroness Curran was raised to the peerage in January 2025.

She was previously Baroness in Waiting (Government Whip) between 12 June 2026 and 22 July 2026. Before that, she was Minister of State in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero between 22 May 2025 and 6 June 2025.

From 2010 to 2015 she was MP for Glasgow East and served in the UK Shadow Cabinet as:

  • Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, 2011 to 2015
  • Shadow Minister for Disabled People, 2010 to 2011

From 1999 to 2011 she was the MSP for Glasgow Baillieston and held several posts in the Scottish Government, including:

  • Minister for Parliamentary Business, 2004 to 2007
  • Minister for Communities, 2003 to 2004
  • Minister for Social Justice, 2002 to 2003
