Lord Privy Seal

Responsibilities

The Lord Privy Seal is responsible for the organisation of government business in the House, providing assistance to all Lords and offering advice on procedure. The Lord Privy Seal also expresses the collective feelings of the House on formal occasions, such as motions of thanks or congratulations.

Current role holder

The Rt Hon Lord True CBE

Lord True was appointed Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords on 6 September 2022.

He was previously Minister of State at the Cabinet Office between 14 February 2020 and 6 September 2022.

Before becoming a Minister, Lord True was Leader of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames from 2010 to 2017. He was Private Secretary to the Opposition Chief Whip in the House of Lords from 1997 to 2010 and Deputy Head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit for Sir John Major, 1990-1994.

Lord True was made a Life Peer in December 2010 and Chaired the Select Committee on Intergenerational Fairness. He was appointed a CBE in 1993.

Lord True read Classics and History at Peterhouse College, Cambridge, graduating in 1973.

Personal life

Lord True’s interests include history, gardening and sport. He is a fluent Italian speaker and has previously lived and studied in Italy.
