United Kingdom total diet replacement ad hoc working group

The ad hoc working group will assess the compositional requirements of total diet replacement (TDR) products in Great Britain following EU exit.

Role

Since 1 January 2021, Great Britain has responsibility for independent scientific risk assessment processes for nutrition-related labelling, composition and standards (NLCS) in accordance with the UK-wide NLCS provisional common framework.

The NLCS policy group was established under the NLCS provisional common framework and is comprised of individuals from the UK devolved administrations. The NLCS policy group has requested an ad hoc expert working group to complete a scientific assessment of the proposed changes to the compositional requirements for TDR for weight control products (defined by Regulation (EU) No 609/2013).

Terms of reference

The ad hoc working group will assess the compositional requirements of TDR products in respect to whether:

  • the minimum value of linoleic acid in TDR products as recommended by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (2021) is appropriate for a UK population
  • the minimum value of alpha-linolenic acid in TDR products as recommended by EFSA (2021) is appropriate for a UK population
  • the maximum value of magnesium in TDR products as recommended by EFSA (2021) is appropriate for a UK population

See EFSA statement on additional scientific evidence in relation to the essential composition of total diet replacement for weight control (2021).

Code of practice

The UK TDR ad hoc working group operates in keeping with guidelines governing scientific advisory committees such as the Government Office for Science’s code of practice for scientific advisory committees (CoPSAC).

The UK TDR ad hoc working group code of practice (PDF, 107 KB, 17 pages) sets out how the working group puts into practice the guidelines governing scientific advisory committees.

Membership

UK TDR ad hoc working group members are appointed as independent scientific experts based on their specific skills and knowledge.

Members are required to conduct themselves in accordance with the CoPSAC.

The ad hoc working group is chaired by Professor Ian Young, Professor of Medicine, Queens University Belfast.

The members are:

  • Professor Susan Fairweather-Tait, Professor of Human Nutrition (Mineral Metabolism), Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia
  • Dr Darren Greenwood, Senior Lecturer in Biostatistics, University of Leeds
  • Professor Julie Lovegrove, Professor of Human Nutrition, Director of the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition and Deputy Director of the Institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research, University of Reading
  • Mrs Gemma Paramor (lay member), finance professional in accounting and investment management
  • Professor John Wilding, Professor of Medicine, Clinical Research into Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology lead, University of Liverpool

Register of interests

The UK TDR ad hoc working group register of interests contains details of all declarations of interest made by members. This information is updated as and when declarations are made.

Meetings

Meeting agendas are published prior to meetings. Minutes will be published as soon as these have been agreed. Meetings will be closed to observation.
