Detail of outcome

Determination

After a period of consultation, the Environment Agency has decided to change the Statutory Main River map across the West Midlands, and Cumbria and Lancashire areas to correct known inaccuracies in the Main River map as per the proposal notice, with the exception of a small number of locations where we are maintaining the existing alignment following public objections.

The Environment Agency is making this change as a ‘determination’ under section 193C(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. This determination represents a formal decision to change the main river map.

The main river map will be formally changed to reflect the determination on 11 January 2023.

Appeals

Following an appeal submitted to the Secretary of State, the Environment Agency has decided to withdraw the proposed Main River alignment in the vicinity of Old Rectory Green, Aughton, Ormskirk.

Detail of feedback received

The Environment Agency has received several objections to certain locations that were proposed to change. The Environment Agency has reviewed these objections, and where appropriate is keeping the existing Main River line in certain locations. Consultation description

The Environment Agency consults the public about proposals to change whether a river or stream is designated as a main river. The Environment Agency carries out maintenance, improvement or construction work on main rivers to manage flood risk. Main rivers are usually larger rivers and streams.

Details of proposed change

The Environment Agency proposes to change the existing Statutory Main River map across the Environment Agency’s West Midlands, and Cumbria and Lancashire areas.

It proposes these changes as a ‘determination’ under section section 193C(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. A determination is a formal decision to change the Main River map.

The proposed changes will correct known inaccuracies from the Main River map, so that the map will show the correct location of the watercourse. They do not change who has power to carry out flood risk management work on the watercourse.
