Detail of outcome

The Department for Transport’s summary of responses document summarises the representations we received to this consultation. It also sets out our responses to the issues raised.

The department decided that the closure should be allowed to take effect. We sent our proposal to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) for ratification in September 2015, as required under legislation.

In October 2015, the ORR completed the ratification process. It is now content for the closure of the existing Rochester station to go ahead. The ratification notice (PDF, 142 KB), dated 15 October 2015, is available to view on the ORR website.

The closure will not take effect until at least 4 weeks after the date of ratification. All services will switch to a new Rochester station in Corporation Street at the start of the winter timetable in December 2015.

Consultation description

Network Rail has carried out an assessment of whether retaining the existing Rochester railway station is value for money. It has concluded that retaining the current station is not appropriate given the investment in a new station and other infrastructure enhancements in the area.

The consultation seeks your views on proposals to close the existing Rochester railway station once the new station is commissioned.
