The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government now surveys private landlords and letting agents using the English Private Landlord Survey.

The Private Landlords Survey aims to provide a snapshot of the composition and experience of landlords and how they (together with any agent) acquire, let, manage and maintain privately rented accommodation.

A similar survey of private landlords was carried out in 2001, 2003 and 2006 as part of the English house condition survey. These are available on the National Archives:
