In order to help encourage greater investment in rental properties and help support the rapid growth of the private rented sector we announced an independent review of the barriers to institutional investment in privately rented homes. This was launched in December 2011 with Sir Adrian Montague in the lead, and a call for evidence was published on 21 February 2012.
The review was undertaken as part of our overall strategy to increase the supply of new homes, and sought to explore the factors that might encourage institutions to invest in new homes for rent. The final report summarising the results of the review was published on 23 August 2012. The government’s response was included in the housing and planning package announced on 6 September 2012.
