Farmer Opinion Tracker
Analysis of farmer views and opinions towards Defra’s vision for farming
This series provides analysis of the farmer opinion surveys run to seek views and opinions of farmers in England on Defra’s vision for farming. Over time farmers are asked a series of broadly the same questions about Defra’s vision for farming, business planning, relationships with farming groups and Defra and the future of farming.
The survey was set up to collect opinion prior to, and during, the agricultural transition. The data collected via this survey is used to monitor farmer opinion over time to see how it is changing as we move through the agricultural transition period.
The survey was first run in Autumn 2019 and then at six monthly intervals. From April 2025, the survey will run once annually. Maintaining the survey once a year allows us to track long term trends, monitor gradual shifts in farmer sentiment and compare results to a single point in time, whilst reducing survey burden on farmers and improving government efficiency.
The next survey is scheduled to be run in Spring 2027.
