Brain science, addiction and drugs

Foresight project looking at how future scientific advances may affect our understanding of addiction and drug use.

Recent scientific advances have moved us to a new level in our understanding of how brains work, how chemicals affect the brain’s performance and, in turn, how this affects our behaviour.

The aim of this project was to provide a vision for how scientific and technological advancement may change our understanding of addiction and drug use over the next 20 years. It explored how we can best manage the use of drugs in the future for the benefit of the individual, community and society.

Based on the work of more than 50 leading scienists and experts the project produced 15 reviews of the state of science covering areas such as neuroscience, genetics, sociology and history.
