The Silks on the Downs pub saved with almost £240,000 support

A popular country pub near Marlborough in Wiltshire has been saved with the support of almost £240,000 from the Community Ownership Fund.

Although the pub originally closed in March 2020 it is now back open; serving pints and food to visitors near and far.

A pub run by the community

Originally named The Wheatsheaf, ‘The Silks’ has been part of Ogbourne St Andrew for over 100 years. The pub shut during the pandemic, but local campaigners managed to raise almost £250,000 to help reopen it. The pub is now run by a dedicated group of local volunteers.

New and improved facilities

The Community Ownership funding has supported a range of improvements to the pub.

These include:

  • new baby changing facilities
  • upgrades to the kitchen
  • better accessibility

A champion for the local area

‘The Silks’ is the only place for locals to get together and socialise and is an integral part of the community.

The pub is also a champion for:

  • the many outdoor activities that take place in the North Wessex Downs
  • the physical and mental benefits of the great outdoors
