Over £11 million to develop brownfield land in East Lothian (Levelling Up Fund 2)

In East Lothian, nearly £11.3 million from the Levelling Up Fund will help free up developable land at a former coal fired power station for regeneration.

The former Cockenzie Power Station closed in 2013 and was demolished in 2015. East Lothian Council acquired the site in 2018. This funding will prepare the site for redevelopment.

Key preparation works

Funding will support key preparation works on the site. These include:

  • removal of the bunding that currently surrounds the former coal store
  • using the bund material to level the former power station area
  • repairing and upgrading the coastal flood defences to the North of the site
  • accessibility improvements to John Muir Way

Redevelopment of the land is part of East Lothian Council’s wider vision for the site  which aims to enhance public areas along the waterfront. The funding will bring investment and jobs to the area.
