£20 million regeneration of Sheerness (Levelling Up Fund 2)

Swale Borough Council were allocated £20 million from the Levelling Up Fund to breathe new life into Sheerness. This funding will support three projects to improve the health, education, leisure and employment opportunities in the town.

Beachfields regeneration

Beachfields is a prominent seafront site in Sheerness which includes a leisure complex and healthy living centre which is home to a GP practice. Levelling Up funding will support significant improvements to the site. The existing building will be refurbished and extended, to deliver a range of health, wellbeing and economic benefits for the community. The public area surrounding the healthy living centre will also be improved to include activities such as Adventure Golf to attract more visitors to the town.

Extending Sheppey College

Sheppey College offers a range of study options for school leavers and adults, and the Levelling Up funding will be used to extend the existing campus.

The additional capacity will allow the college to deliver:

  • new courses to give people better job prospects and provide routes into local employment
  • a broad range of adult learning courses in areas such as data analysis, literacy, numeracy and community learning

Masters House workspace

The former council office, Masters House, will be transformed into new high quality modern workspace for young entrepreneurs aged 18-30 who wish to start up their own business with the support of charity, Launch It. Disused garage space will be converted into creative workspaces for local SME businesses.

Cllr Tim Gibson, Council Leader of Swale Borough Council said:

This funding will make a tangible difference to the lives of everyone living in Sheerness and will be felt across the whole of the Isle of Sheppey and beyond. We have identified and targeted four of the crucial areas; health, leisure, education and employment opportunities. We will be reconfiguring the Healthy Living Centre, expanding the college, and refurbishing Masters house. We would like to thank the UK government for this funding and every penny will go towards improving the community we love.
