£17.9 million investment to level up Worksop Town Centre (Levelling Up Fund 2)

A total of £17.9 million from the Levelling Up Fund has been awarded to Bassetlaw District Council to transform Worksop Town Centre.

The funding, along with an additional £2 million from the Council and its partners has allowed the Council to purchase the Priory Centre shopping precinct and begin regeneration work that will provide additional leisure and entertainment facilities in the town centre, encouraging more people back to the high street.

Redevelopment of the Priory Centre

These improvements will include:

  • the development of a leisure and entertainment facility, focused on family-orientated activities including tenpin bowling, an indoor soft play facility, crazy golf and a café
  • the creation of a multi-functional indoor market area
  • the creation of a new food court and entertainment venue
  • an upgrade of the current retail premises allowing the Council to retain existing retailers and attract new businesses, incorporating a cycle hub with changing facilities and bike lockers

Councillor Julie Leigh, Cabinet Member for Identity and Place at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “The redevelopment of the Priory Centre is a huge project for Worksop and Bassetlaw and bringing a leisure and entertainment venue to the Priory Centre gives people another reason to come into Worksop.”

Further regeneration of Worksop

Other planned improvements in Worksop will complement the redevelopment of the Priory centre and support the council’s long-term vision for the town, they include:

  • improvements to the existing road surfacing to ensure there is easy access into the Priory Centre
  • creation of a footbridge over the Chesterfield Canal, resulting in improved connectivity to the main town centre from the residential areas to the north of the town, which is one of the most deprived areas within Bassetlaw
  • enabling the redevelopment of the area for new town centre living, bringing two underutilised sites forward for development
  • delivering a new green towpath link along the Chesterfield Canal with new moorings, to capitalise on canal boat traffic, whilst improving a green corridor through the town centre

Michael Hirst, Chief Executive of BPL, who will deliver the leisure and entertainment element of the project, said: “We are delighted to be partnering on this exciting new project and believe it will be a fantastic family entertainment venue attracting people into the town centre.”
