£127,000 funding to support Vogrie Hall

Vogrie Hall in Gorebridge, Midlothian, was awarded over £127,000 from the Community Ownership Fund. Originally built in the 1930s, the building has long been at the heart of the community but had to close for urgent repairs in 2020.

Charity takeover

Taking over Vogrie Hall are St David’s Brass Band, a registered charity, who initially fundraised over £270,000. Along with many residents, they have cherished memories of the hall – from discos to live music. The Community Ownership Fund will support urgent refurbishment of the building.

Funding will enable Vogrie Hall to:

  • provide event space for residents to host weddings and parties
  • restore the beloved community space to its former glory
  • provide a place for the band to rehearse
  • restore pride in the community
  • bring local people together

Ellen Scott, Chair of Gorebridge Community Cares said:

Vogrie Hall holds many fond memories for local folk. There was great sadness as it fell into disrepair and a feeling of bygone days lost. An ex-mining community like Gorebridge was the perfect place for the St David’s Brass Band to set up home, after many years of an uncertain base.

I am sure the Community will be very pleased that this iconic building has been saved from the demolisher’s wrecking ball and that young and old will be able to learn and play music for many years to come in a lovely fit for purpose building”.
