Following the publication of the UK climate projections (UKCP09), Defra identified a gap in people’s knowledge and understanding of the risks of climate change. This included the changes that would be necessary to adapt to them.

This project identified ways of working with citizens, communities and charities in coastal regions at risk from the effects of climate change, such as coastal erosion and flooding. It focused particularly on how to reach people and groups who are not actively involved in environmental activities and are least likely to be well-informed.

The objectives were to:

  • find out what current levels of knowledge were - how coastal communities perceive the risks
  • explore what would motivate people to become more involved in adapting their communities to future risks
  • find out what barriers are preventing people from engaging with the climate change predictions - how to overcome those barriers
  • consider different ways of engaging people
  • recommend ways for people working in coastal communities to work with them most effectively

The project started in 2009 and was completed in 2010 at a cost of £57,444.
